Tia-Clair Toomey Extends Her Reign of CrossFit Dominance

Tia-Clair Toomey was expected to dominate the competition leading into the 2020 CrossFit Games. And she did just that, breaking records along the way, as she was crowned the Fittest Woman on Earth this past weekend. The 27-year-old Australian ended the competition with 1,025 points out of 1,200, separating herself far enough from runner-up Katrin Davidsdottir, who scored 665 points, that the win was never in doubt.

Toomey did more than just control the female competition, winning nine out of 12 events outright—she also made history in a number of ways. She became the first female competitor to win four CrossFit Games titles (she broke the record for total wins last year, and has won every year since 2017). Other records broken include consecutive event wins with six and all-time event wins with 24.

Although she dominated the entire three-day finals weekend, it was Day 2 where she really set herself apart, sweeping all four events along with training partner and male champion Mat Fraser.

“The most amazing thing about this year’s Games—and this era of CrossFit—is watching the greatest male and greatest female athletes in our sport at their peak and competing with one another across every event,” said CrossFit CEO Eric Roza. “Someday, a future generation of CrossFit fans will mark the dominance of Mat Fraser and Tia-Clair Toomey as the period when CrossFit emerged as a global sport, riding on the shoulders of two legends who were competing not only for each year’s title but for their place in history.”

As the winner, Toomey walks away with the $300,000 prize. Following this year’s historic competition, CrossFit also announced February 18 as the start date for 2021 CrossFit Open. Then, Toomey will begin the project of defending her title and continuing to build upon her unprecedented legacy.
