‘Tidying Up with Marie Kondo’ Was Supposed to Be Scripted…Just Let that Sink in

Updated

The phrase “Does this spark joy?” has practically become our daily motto, thanks to Netflix’s Tidying Up with Marie Kondo. While it’s hard to picture the reality show in any other format, that’s exactly what (almost) happened.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, executive producer Gail Berman discussed the popular Netflix series and revealed the original idea for Kondo’s book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, was scripted. Just let that sink in.

“We acquired the rights to Kondo’s book about three years ago when we met Marie and started to work with her,” she said. “Initially, we were interested in doing the show in a scripted format, and we were also approached to do it as a film, but we finally identified the most appropriate way for this journey to end.”

Berman went on to say that it was a no-brainer once everything fell into place, adding, “There were ups and downs, but we always thought that there was something very special in Marie and her message.”

Phew, that was close.
