TikTok creator finds out her 'incorrect' cleaning hack was written into Hallmark movie: 'Still cool though!'
An appliance tech from Connecticut is still getting over the fact that a life hack she once shared on TikTok somehow made its way into the script of a popular Hallmark movie.
The only problem? It just so happened to be a hack she was later proven wrong about. Oops.
TikTok user Renae (@renduh) shared the news to the platform on Jan. 17 after a close friend alerted her to the fact that she was “famous.” Apparently, a viral hack she shared was recently referenced in The Wedding Veil: Inspiration, a new Hallmark rom-com starring Autumn Reeser, Paolo Bernardini and Lacey Chabert — and there was no question they were talking about her.
“You NEED to see this,” Renae’s friend Josh allegedly texted her. “Like RIGHT NOW.”
In the clip, actress Kacey Rohl’s character references some of the popular influencers she follows on TikTok, including “everyone’s favorite appliance repair woman.”
Renae and her friend took this to mean her. After all, Renae has made quite a name for herself in her own little corner of TikTok, where she frequently answers questions about common home appliance problems and commands a pretty large following of more than 649,000 users.
But even if there’s some doubt as to who the famous TikToker in question really is, something Carlo Marks’ character says next really clinches it.
“Oh, I follow her!” he tells Rohl, before asking if she saw “the one about dishwasher pods.”
Turns out, she had — but it’s not until later on in the clip, when Autumn Reeser’s character exits the scene, that we get the full details.
“Hey, what was the thing with the dishwasher pods?” Reeser asks on her way out the door.
“Oh, you don’t put it in the detergent thingy,” says Rohl, “it gunks it all up.”
“Yeah, you just put it in the utensil caddy,” adds Marks before Reeser smiles and tells him, “Good tip!”
After watching the clip, Renae’s jaw is practically on the floor.
“Holy s***, they’re talking about me!” she says in her TikTok. “And they referenced the one piece of information that I was incorrect about and then later corrected.“
Clearly, Renae is both excited and kind of embarrassed about the whole thing, considering she was humbly corrected last year after receiving a ton of feedback about her dishwasher pod advice. In fact, in one of her videos from November 2022, she comes clean about why she continued to pass on that bit of advice for years, based on her own personal experiences fixing dishwashers.
That said, Renae got a “very important email” from the folks at Cascade after her advice went viral, inviting her to the Procter & Gamble headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio. There, she toured the company’s labs and talked directly to their scientists, who had some pretty solid research on why dishwasher pods belong in the designated detergent dispenser and not in the utensil caddy.
Apparently, if you throw the pod into the utensil caddy, 80% of the detergent will wash away during the prewash cycle before the main wash can even get started.
Despite it all, Renae still seems pretty stoked to have gotten such an awesome shout-out on TV.
“I know the movie script was probably written before I came out with my update, but uhhh … oops,” she wrote in her TikTok caption. “STILL COOL, THOUGH! Also, whoever wrote this into the movie — hi! Thank you so much.”
In the comments, her followers did their best to make her feel better.
“Congratulations and condolences,” wrote one person.
“It’s Hollywood,” added someone else. “As long as they’re talking about you, it’s good.”
