Timothée Chalamet Wore a Vintage Cartier Brooch to the Academy Awards
If there is a lapel on the red carpet without a lapel pin did it even happen?
This awards season has answered the men and jewelry question definitively, and, as T&C pointed out in its Kings of Diamonds story, that answer is unequivocally yes. Men have been some of the greatest jewelry collectors in history—See: kings, and Maharajahs, and captain of industry JP Morgan—and this awards season has seen that tradition return in grand style.
Actor Timothée Chalamet has previously showed us how to do it, showing up courtside at a NBA basketball game in 2019 in a Vuitton necklace, and tonight he added another item to his jewelry resume in a vintage Cartier ruby and diamond brooch.
The piece is from 1955 from the house’s Heritage collection of important pieces, and looking at it, it is clear to see why. The rubies are Burmese—the best—and the lines are indicative of the glamour of 1950s jewelry which was highly influenced by Hollywood style. In other words, perfect for Oscar night.
Tonight, Chalamet paired the brooch with an otherwise subdued look; a navy zip-up blazer and matching slacks that echoed a classic flightsuit style, underpinned by a simple white button-down shirt and accented with slicked-back hair and black leather boots. While at first glance, it may not have appeared to be the flashiest ensemble, but the understated style allowed his Cartier brooch to stand out—because sometimes it's best to let a great piece of jewelry do all the talking.
