Tina Fey and Carol Burnett Are Working on a Movie Based on Burnett's Memoir 'Carrie and Me'
In the comedy collaboration of our dreams, Tina Fey and Carol Burnett are teaming up to make a movie about-what else-Carol Burnett.
The pair are signed on as producers for the upcoming adaptation of Burnett's 2013 memoir, Carrie and Me: A Mother-Daughter Love Story. The story follows Burnett's life through the lens of her relationship with her daughter, Carrie Hamilton. Hamilton had a public struggle with drug abuse in her youth, but became sober at 17. In 2002, Hamilton died of cancer at the age of 38.
"I felt Carrie on my right shoulder as I was writing," Burnett told USA Today in 2013. "It's about our relationship, how much we were joined at the hip. I was hoping to bring Carrie's essence to the page. I felt good about. it."
For her part, Tina Fey is a longtime admirer of Burnett. Alongside fellow funny woman Amy Poehler, Fey presented the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award to Burnett in 2016. After firing off a few sharp jokes, they finished with, "The point is, Carol is better than all of us. We’re gonna give her a prize for it."
Fey also helped celebrate Burnett her Mark Twain Prize in 2013, noting that her love for Burnett was "just shy of creepy." (That also happens to be the correct amount of love for Carol Burnett.)
The Carrie and Me adaptation is still in its early stages, but Fey and Burnett are among a small team working to realize the project. I, Tonya writer Steven Rogers is producing as well, and sibling team Ian and Eshom Nelms (Small Town Crime) are handling the script.
