'That hat is not any good': Immigrant says he was attacked for wearing MAGA gear

A Maryland man who immigrated to the U.S. from Togo said he was attacked by two men last Saturday because they were upset that he was wearing a Make America Great Again hat in support of President Trump.

As local news outlet Fox 5 reports, Atsu Nable — a Republican who volunteered for Trump’s 2017 inauguration — was walking in his Germantown, Md., neighborhood when two men confronted him over his red MAGA cap. Nable said the men told him to take it off before he felt one of them hit him from behind. He initially tried to walk away, but the men allegedly continued to hit him, causing him to fall down.

“I was like, ‘Why are you doing that? You know? We don’t have to do this,’” he told Fox 5. “They said, ‘No no no, that hat is not any good.’ Then they started punching me on my head.”

The men allegedly smashed Nable’s headphones and tried to take his phone after he took their photo. Witnesses called 911, and Montgomery County police officers investigating the incident have arrested two men, Jovan Crawford, 27, and Scott Roberson, 25, on charges of robbery and second-degree assault and other offenses.

A statement issued by Montgomery County Police Department said Crawford and Roberson were trying to hide amidst a group of children at a nearby playground.

Nable, who moved to the U.S. in 2007 and has since become a citizen, told Fox 5 that he has a right to his political beliefs.

“I came here for freedom,” he said.
