Tom Brady's Dad Blasts Bill Belichick's 'Horrible' Social Skills, But Defends His Coaching
Tom Brady and Bill Belichick were a force to be reckoned with for nearly two decades. Under Belichick's coaching, Brady led the New England Patriots to a record six Super Bowl victories, creating one of football's untouchable legacies and confirming both Brady and Belichick's legend status in their respective jobs.
All that success didn't come without hard work, however, and Belichick was known for his tough love on the field. His approach certainly hasn't come without results, but Brady's father Tom Brady Sr. feels that there are areas that Belichick could certainly improve on.
The elder Brady spoke to The Boston Globe about his admiration and respect for Belichick, but also offered some pointed criticism for the coach at the same time.
"Bill is tough," Brady Sr. stated plainly. "He runs a military system. It’s a different generation. Bill is a great, great, great coach. But his interpersonal skills are horrible. That’s the bottom line."
He went on to cite examples of when Belichick's social skills ended up coming back to bite him. "How many times has he said — back in ‘15 or ‘16 — that he wanted to win without Tommy?" Brady Sr. recalled of the coach's comments about his son. "When he went without Tommy, he didn’t know what he was losing. You’re losing more than just a quarterback."
"Ego sometimes gets in the way of things. I think it did with Bill," he concluded. "Now, he’s in a situation where he’s gotten crucified for the last few years by everybody and a lot of luster has come off his rose."
Belichick, now 71, is looking for his next gig after departing the Patriots last month following a disappointing season to cap off his 24-year-run with the team. Brady, meanwhile, hung up his helmet for good last year after three seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
