Many young designers are paying homage to the '90s recently: there's been a resurgence of sharp suiting, animal prints, bike shorts, square neck tops, velvet, bodysuits, and even low-rise denim. They are, in many ways, paying homage to Tom Ford's decade-defining fashion while he was at the helm of Gucci.
Perhaps as a reminder of where it all started, Tom Ford's fall 2019 collection nodded to his own 1996 collection for Gucci. The collection was predominantly combinations of suiting-dress shirts, pleat-front pants, blazers-done in shiny silks and sumptuous velvets. The fit, aside from the nipped-in blazers, was louche and dripping with signature Tom Ford sex appeal. There was even a red velvet blazer paired with red silk pants, modeled by Gigi Hadid, that seemed to be a direct throwback to the red velvet suit from his 1996 Gucci collection, memorably worn by Gwyneth Paltrow at the MTV music awards.
The slinky evening wear section also nodded to ‘96 Gucci: elegant columns in a stretch material with cut outs, updated for 2019 with heavy chain link details and capes that gathered around the arms like a shirt as you’re slipping it off and over your head.
