When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle held their royal wedding in May, fans might've expected celebrities like the Beckhams and the Clooneys to show up, but Tom Hardy was a pleasant surprise on the guest list.

His appearance at the nuptials with his wife Charlotte Riley wasn't completely unwarranted; the actor had been seen out with Prince Harry before. However, if you're looking for an exact reason why Hardy snagged an exclusive invite to the event, don't expect him to start spilling details.

"It's deeply private," the actor told Esquire in his September cover story. But he did say of the groom, "Harry is a f*cking legend."

Hardy attended the wedding right after wrapping his film, Fonzo, where he plays legendary gangster Al Capone. The schedule was intense; they shot in New Orleans with 19-hour work days for six weeks, Esquire reports. To go from that straight to your friend's wedding is a sign of true dedication.

It's unknown exactly how Hardy and Harry met, but the actor became an ambassador for the Prince's Trust, Prince Charles' charity for disadvantaged youth, in 2010. In September 2017, he co-sponsored a campaign with the organization called Youth Can Do It, which helped build young people's self-esteem. "The Prince’s Trust is a charity that has always been close to my heart," he told Mirror at the time.

Hardy and the Duke of Sussex have also had a few run-ins at the Audi Polo Match at London's Coworth Park in 2014 and 2016.

They were rumored to have filmed a secret Star Wars: The Last Jedi cameo together along with Prince William-as stormtroopers-in 2016. (The scene was ultimately cut because the princes were too tall, apparently.)

The pair also crossed paths last summer at the Dunkirk premiere in London, where the prince also met his namesake, former One Directioner Harry Styles.
