At this point, literally even the actor who plays Spider-Man thinks the franchise could seriously use some more diversity. Specifically, Tom Holland thinks it's time for the franchise to embrace a bit more gender equality and have a female web-slinger take the lead.

"Maybe you have a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman," Tom suggested during an interview with People earlier this week. "We’ve had three Spider-Mans in a row; we’ve all been the same. It’d be nice to see something different."

And this is coming from the only man who could arguably have something to lose (ya know, a paycheck) by giving the franchise a new, more diverse lead. Tom made it clear that he still loves playing the character, but, as a thoughtful human, he also made it clear that he's able to separate his own interests from the greater good (which, for the record, is about as close to real world superhero-ing as most people can hope to get).

"I don’t want to say goodbye to Spider-Man—but I feel like we might be ready to say goodbye to Spider-Man," he added. "I don’t want to be responsible for holding back the next young person that comes in who deserves it just as much so."

Tom went on to explain that, after six years of working nonstop, he's ready to slow down and take some time for other things, like family (he "can't wait to be a dad," apparently) and figuring out what he wants out of life. Unfortunately for Tom (and his/our hopes of some more diversity for the Spider-Man movies), producer Amy Pascal seems pretty damn committed to making more movies starring Tom Holland as Spider-Man.

"We are getting ready to make the next Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland and Marvel," she told Fandango in a November. "We’re thinking of this as three films, and now we’re going to go on to the next three."

Sounds like there's some serious same-page-getting to be done here, no?
