Old New York mingled with a dose of Tinseltown glam seeps from the pores of Warwick New York. Remnants of the past still linger in the interior detailing, and no-one can overlook the fabled past of the Emory Roth structure. Soothing, neutral colours adorn most guest rooms, but spacious suites take on more striking tones including black-and-white with gold-and-green accents. The hotel dates to 1926, so even the most modest rooms provide plenty of wiggle room for couples or friends. Its location is ideal, with easy access to Central Park and minutes from the Museum of Modern Art, Rockefeller Center and the array of luxury shops that line Fifth Avenue.

From the handsome limestone fa?ade to the clubby wood-panelled lounge and gracious guest rooms (damask curtains, soft rose-pink tones), the property has a refined European charm. There are Asian elements too — note the Oriental accents in the lobby furnishings and flower arrangements. But it's really the spa, the first American outlet of the beloved La Prairie brand, with six treatment rooms, famous facials and the decadent Caviar Luxe manicure that sets this place apart. Don't miss The Feeding of the Horses, a noontime ritual in which you get to feed the carriage horses that trot by the front door.

Inspired by the Paris apartment he lived in as a child, French designer Jacques Garcia's interiors combine European elegance – white walls, soaring ceilings, tiled floors – with funky, decadent touches such as tapestry-covered antique furniture, worn and faded Persian rugs, a 200-year-old fireplace, an antique staircase, and a glass atrium-like structure on the ground floor that houses a restaurant. There are two swanky bars, a vintage fireplace and a three-Michelin-star restaurant. Don't forget to sample the dark and decadent cocktail emporium Elephant Bar.
