At House Beautiful, we keep an expert eye on what trends designers and brands are favoring year-round, from color and flooring to outdoor rooms and gardens. But it should come as no surprise that the space we monitor most closely is the ever-evolving kitchen. Sure, we're not renovating our homes annually, but we still want to know what smart and stylish updates we can make to our kitchens. It is the quote-on-quote heart of the home, after all! If you're looking for a bigger project, like updating your cabinets or swapping out your backsplash, we outline the design trends that will last. If you simply need your hardware, cookware, and appliances to work harder for you, we have recommendations you can shop for all. Finally, and most intriguingly, we're exploring how brands are using AI to save you time, money, and stress. Keep reading for the top kitchen trends of 2024 that will make your space feel and function better.

1. Plain, Pretty Cabinetry

It’s not that we don’t love an inky blue island in a creamy white kitchen, but this beloved look is finally taking a backseat to the simplicity and warmth of wood finishes that are time-tested and nature-approved. Above, Idea Space designed custom cabinets in white oak and used flush mounts over the sink by Arteriors.

2. Non-Recessed Lighting

At some point—perhaps as a revolt against builder-grade can lights—designers decided that mini flush mounts were the new way to bring overhead lighting to kitchens, eliminating pockmarked ceilings. Beware, though: Too many, and this look may fall flat fast.

3. hot Refrigerators

It used to be that all the “cool” things were reserved for the luxury appliance market, but now every brand is showing up in style. The new 36" Counter-Depth 4-Door Refrigerator (KRQC736RPS) from KitchenAid has removable bins that look good enough to leave on the counter, ultra-bright LED lighting (ensuring your food looks great too), and wood-look trim with metallic knobs to set off its smoky gray interior.

4. Timeless Tile

Beloved for its imperfect texture, zellige tile has been around for centuries. Now, designers are using it to offset the newness of recently renovated kitchens. Brands like Cle?, Mosaic House, and Otto Tiles & Design (shown below) have an abundance of styles and colors to choose from.

5. Cookware That Saves Space

Housewares brand Joseph Joseph, best known for its organizational products, launched its first nesting nonstick cookware line. Each pan has an ingenious handle that folds into itself, giving home chefs 50 percent more drawer space.

6. Vanishing Vents

Ranges with built-in vents, like the one in this kitchen by McCroskey Interiors (right), have been around, but Falmec recently launched two products that are all about the art of deception: A countertop downdraft system pops up when needed, and a “floating shelf” for objects secretly houses a vent (left).

7. Stainproof Dining Nooks

It’s no surprise that nearly every textile brand now has dynamic performance and outdoor fabrics that have made their way into our favorite dining spots. Banquettes, like this one from Ballard Designs, are reigning supreme in eat-in kitchens, where comfortable corner seating upholstered in a durable, no-stress material is a must-have.

8. Triple-Duty Faucets

Clear your breakfast bar for Italian company Gessi’s Vita Caffe? with a built-in coffee function that uses espresso pods to dispense short or long coffee shots. Don’t need caffeine? Turn the dial for filtered or sparkling water.

9. Ovens That Actually Clean

German brand Miele takes self-cleaning ovens to another level. Its HydroClean technology uses soap and fresh water to wash and rinse and then drains itself, guaranteeing your oven is always ready for the next culinary masterpiece.

Brands are using AI to save you time, money, and stress. Your AI-enabled appliances know your groceries, offer recipes, and program your oven to cook it all perfectly. It may not be for you, but it is coming. At least your milk will never go bad again.

Hearst Owned

Cabinetry brand Isla Porter is debuting an AI-powered helper to simplify kitchen remodel planning. Designers walk their clients through a 20-minute lifestyle survey, then scan their space with a 3D measurement tool (to locate electric, plumbing, and other main lines). Using AI and building-specific tech, Isla Porter generates a custom plan. In three weeks, a color rendering and materials list arrives—all that’s left to do is review and place the order.
