The check-in area is manned via young, hip staff in slick uniforms and watched over by a three-foot-tall Buddha statue. The colour scheme is the brand’s usual red and gold, though since most of the hotel is purposefully plunged into semi-darkness, it’s perhaps best to concentrate on the outlines rather than specific hues. It’s a slight climb to get up here from the river, but the leafy, peaceful environs make it more than worthwhile; in fact for romantics it’s ideal. The hotel – or rather the ruins of the cottages that once stood here – was bought in the 1980s by owner-artist Alexander Paul. By the time the Iron Curtain fell, it had been creatively restored and was open for business. The two adjoined houses, accessed via the original cobbled courtyard, are peppered with rustic touches like cart wheels, logs and antique furnishings. The six rooms are heavy on natural materials and décor is similarly bucolic, focussing on the still-life paintings of the owner and his wife, wooden animal sculptures and the like.
