Top Baby Names of 2018: Millennials Are Naming Their Kids After Kale, Kardashians, and Chip and Joanna Gaines
If you’re pregnant, adopting, or even thinking about having a baby sometime soon, there are probably more than a few things weighing on your mind. But one of the biggest may be what to name your impending bundle of joy. Parenting resource site BabyCenter has a few ideas for you.
Last week, the website revealed its Top 100 Names of 2018 list. And once again, Sophia is the top choice for new parents for girls. In fact, it’s been the top name for girls for the last 10 years in a row. Jackson also continued its streak as the top name for boys.

"Sophia is the dominant girls' name of the decade, with no signs of slowing down," Linda Murray, BabyCenter's senior vice president of consumer experience and global editor in chief, said in a statement. "It has worldwide appeal, it's pronounceable in multiple languages, and it's feminine and sophisticated all at once. As for Jackson, it's a modern twist on the old classic Jack."

But those aren’t the only popular names to make it on the list. According to BabyCenter, Millennial and Gen Z parents are finding plenty of inspiration in their everyday lives for their baby names, including from their favorite foods, flavors, spirituality, and even the online game Fortnite.

"Parents are inspired by the things they love as well as the sound of a name," Murray said. "In the past, we'd look to the Bible or royalty for name inspiration. Today's parents turn to other sources. We've had two decades plus of 'unique' names, and anything goes. It's not like the days when every other baby was named Jessica, Jason, or Jennifer.”
For example, spiritual names like Peace rose 66 percent this year while Rainbow’s use increased by 26 percent. On the food front, the name Kale rose 35 percent for girls. Boys are increasingly being named after nature, with names like Ocean jumping 31 percent and Sky up 38 percent.
The Kardashians were among the most impactful celebrities, with Stormi (Kylie Jenner's daughter's name) rising 63 percent, Dream (Rob Kardashian's daughter) 42 percent, Saint (Kim Kardashian's son) 42 percent, and Reign (Kourtney Kardashian's son) 27 percent. Chip and Joanna Gaines were up there as well, with Magnolia jumping 21 percent, and their kids' names, especially Drake and Emmie, also on the rise.
As for those Fornite names, Ramirez jumped 57 percent in usage in 2018 while names like Leviathan increased by 46 percent for boys, Bunny by 30 percent for girls, and Rogue, up 47 percent for girls and 21 percent for boys.
Still, tradition runs deep. The overall top 10 names for girls include Sophia, Olivia, Emma, Ava, Isabella, Aria, Riley, Amelia, Mia, and Layla. For boys, the top 10 include Jackson, Liam, Noah, Aiden, Caden, Grayson, Lucas, Mason, Oliver, and Elijah.
