Gurira surprised her Black Panther co-star with birthday cupcakes onstage during the 2018 Essence Black Women In Hollywood Oscars Luncheon on Thursday in Beverly Hills, Calif. Nyong’o had pulled off her own surprise by flying in late the night before, to be on-hand to present her friend with an award. But it was Nyong’o who was shocked when Gurira led the audience in a rendition of “Happy Birthday” and gifted her with a tray of sweet treats for her 35th. “I had to do that, I’m sorry,” Gurira said. “She just got off a plane late last night, made it here at midnight on her own birthday.
