Note: contains spoilers for the final season of Game of Thrones.

Prepare to swallow a very bitter pill – not only did Tormund and Brienne not end up together on Game of Thrones, but extra material featuring the pair actually hit the cutting room floor.

Kristofer Hivju, who played Tormund Giantsbane from the show's third season onwards, told Digital Spy that on-screen moments between him and co-star Gwendoline Christie ended up cut from the episodes as aired.

“We did a lot of stuff with Tormund and Brienne that they took out, because it became too much," he revealed. (Though, as we pointed out, surely you can never have too much Tormund and Brienne?)

Hivju explained that he even improvised a monologue that Tormund delivered to "the big woman" but it was removed from the final episode. "I think they took the right choice in the edit, but there is some fun stuff laying around," he said.

Those deleted scenes will have to serve as some small morsel of comfort to Tormund and Brienne shippers now that the series has ended.

John Bradley (Samwell Tarly) and Hannah Murray (Gilly) also revealed their favourite scene that was cut from the show – it involves the White Walkers – while Isaac Hempstead Wright (Bran Stark) reflected on a scene he shot for the Game of Thrones pilot that never made it to air.
