The Touching Way the Grammys Paid Tribute to Foo Fighters Drummer Taylor Hawkins
The Grammys honored late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins in a touching video tribute.
Ahead of this year's In Memoriam performance, host Trevor Noah presented a video montage of the musician, paying tribute to the Hawkins after his death last week at the age of 50. The clip included performances and interview clips filmed throughout his career, including a one where he said, "I realized that to be a good drummer, you have to be a good actor."
The video was soundtracked by the Foo Fighters ballad "My Hero," ending in a live version of the audience singing along to the moving song.
In addition to the touching video, "Everything I Wanted" singer Billie Eilish also paid tribute to Hawkins during her "Happier Than Ever" performance earlier in the show. The seven-time Grammy winner wore a shirt printed with the late drummer's face.
The legendary rock group swept this year's rock categories, winning all three of their nominated awards during the pre-show telecast. Members Dave Grohl, Pat Smear, Chris Shiflett, Nate Mendel, and Rami Jaffee were scheduled to perform, but pulled out in the wake of Hawkins' death. The band has also canceled the remaining performances of their tour.
"The Foo Fighters family is devastated by the tragic and untimely loss of our beloved Taylor Hawkins. His musical spirit and infectious laughter will live on with all of us forever," the band wrote on Twitter March 25. "Our hearts go out to his wife, children and family, and we ask that their privacy be treated with the utmost respect in this unimaginable difficult time."
