Tour de France Legend Peter Sagan Rides Trails In South Africa
South Africa is apparently the place to be this time of year. Between Darkfest and the weather, it's not hard to see why top pros are drawn to the region.
It isn't just downhillers and freeriders who are down there though, road cycling legend Peter Sagan also just took to social media to show off his little winter training vacation. Check it out below.
Sagan has been going full tilt on mountain biking since he decided to call it a career as far as the Tour De France goes. But, his foray into mountain biking is not totally out of left field, Sagan actually started riding mountain bikes well before he was a road racer.
But, in more current news, Sagan is aiming to secure a spot in the 2024 Paris Olympics which is why he's been hitting the mountain bike so hard these last several months.
He clearly has some handling skills so maybe all that time on the road bike did pay off after all. Speaking of which the worlds of road and mountain biking have become more closely intertwined as more and more cyclists have been turning to XCO and other XC disciplines to stay sharp in the offseason.
So much so that even riders who are at the top of their road game like Tom Pidcock are switching almost exclusively to squishy bikes and he even went on the record saying he'd keep mountain biking if he had to only race one discipline.
We'd love to see Sagan make a run on the Olympics in XC this season, he has been there for mountain biking once at the Rio Games in 2016. It did not go too great. Sagan took 35th and was lapped, disqualifying him.
He has a lot to prove if he's making it back in this year which is funny to say about one of the greatest road riders of this generation. Regardless of what happens, it has been a compelling storyline watching Sagan make this push and we look forward to seeing what comes of it.
