Tracee Ellis Ross Shared Her Favorite Sunscreen for Smooth, Makeup-Free Skin at 48
Tracee Ellis Ross revealed her absolute favorite sunscreen, Epicuren Discovery’s X-Treme Cream Propolis Sunscreen SFP 45+.
The mineral sunscreen contains propolis, which is a beneficial glue produced by bees.
Ross says this sunscreen “looks natural” on darker skin tones.
With her luscious curls, flawless skin, and signature style, Tracee Ellis Ross always steps out looking incredible—and now we know exactly how she keeps her complexion so even and smooth.
In a new interview with Marie Claire, the Black-ish actress revealed her all-time favorite sunscreen: Epicuren’s X-Treme Cream Propolis Sunscreen SPF 45+. She’s such a big fan that she’s been hyping it up for years now. “It looks natural,” Ross, 48, told Harper’s Bazaar in 2017. “Some sunscreens are not great if you’re a person of color.” (You can find it on Amazon or Dermstore.)
What makes this SPF worthy of Ross’ luxurious skincare routine? Beyond blending into all skin tones seamlessly, the sunscreen contains propolis, which is a glue produced by bees.
Propolis is widely used in medicine for its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and healing properties. Research shows it can help absorb UV radiation, making it a great addition to sunscreen, and can even be helpeful in treating acne. (That said, some people can have allergic reactions to bee products—so always test a patch of your skin first!)
Epicuren’s X-Treme Cream SPF 45+ combines propolis with zinc oxide, which is found in most mineral sunscreens as a physical filter that blocks the sun’s rays.
For Ross, it’s all about keeping the skin healthy. “Some people spend time putting on makeup,” the Pattern Beauty founder told Vogue in 2019. “I spend time hydrating my skin.”
In fact, unless she’s working or heading to an event, Ross doesn’t wear makeup at all. “I don’t do tinted moisturizer. I don’t do foundation,” she revealed in her Marie Claire interview. “This is what you guys usually see of my skin, unless I’m on a red carpet. I usually don’t wear foundation on a red carpet or in photo shoots. I only wear foundation for television.”
“[Black women] hold so much power in our beauty,” Ross told Elle last year. “Our beauty is filled with love and joy and an emotional intelligence that reaches into spaces that allow us to connect with each other in such sacred ways.”
