Trader Joe's Controversial Fan-Favorite Treat Is Back on Shelves, and Shoppers Say Them 'May Need 2' Boxes
A fan-favorite Trader Joe’s treat has officially arrived back in stores for the season, but it wasn’t that long ago that the same treat was receiving some much deserved backlash online. Brigadeiro is a beloved dessert with a rich Brazilian heritage. These bite-sized balls of chocolate, condensed milk and cocoa powder are generally covered in sprinkles and revered as a nostalgic dessert for those who grew up with it.
After discovering that her favorite Brazilian treat was now being co-opted by Trader Joe’s, award-winning chef and owner of Baiana in Seattle Emme Ribeiro Collins took to her platform last year to call out the mislabeling. The boxes of brigadeiros being sold by Trader Joe’s were advertising the popular dessert as being a “melt-in-your-mouth treat from Portugal,” however, its real roots are planted in Brazil.

While entirely correct, Collin’s callout actually seems to have made an impact. When news of this season's brigadeiros’ return to Trader Joe’s hit the web, a photo of the packaging circulating online shows no claim of Portugal in sight. However, a quick search of the product on TJ's website does give a bit of an explanation into the reasoning behind the inclusion of Portugal on the labeling of a uniquely Brazilian treat.

“We’ve heard that if you attend any party in Brazil, chances are good you’ll find brigadeiros on the sweets table,” TJ’s details in the product description. “These confections are the country’s official ‘national truffle,’ the description continues, “Trader Joe’s Brigadeiros are made for us in Portugal, where they’re also a treasured confection.”
So there it is. Sure, TJ’s most likely adjusted the description after last year’s callout to cover their bases, but it’s also nice to see that the misleading labeling has been potentially removed from the packaging. And now that these rich, dense and chocolatey treats are back in stock, customers can now snag a box of nine for an easy $3.79 for a limited time.
They’ll be located in the freezer aisle along with the other international treats, but you’ll want to act quick because no limited-offering item ever lasts long. And with the way TJ’s is releasing special fall offerings, your local is likely to be chock full of others looking for the same sweet tooth fix as yourself.
