The Trader Joe's Seasonal Delicacy Fans Say Is An 'Immediate Need'
Trader Joe's
It seems like every day there’s another reason to stop by Trader Joe’s, and at this point, we might as well just make it a daily thing. From indescribably delicious culinary fare — like vibrant shrimp pouches or a lofty stack of griddle cakes — to the impossibly happy team members, is there really a reason not to go?
Considering there’s never a wrong time to visit the quirky retailer, if you have to choose, popping into TJ’s during the holidays is sure to get you in the spirit. The epicurean paradise turns into quite the festive destination when the weather cools, leading shoppers to discover goodies of all sorts lining the grocer’s shelves. Ranging from simple sugar cookie dough to more complex flavors, there’s genuinely not a product Trader Joe’s hasn’t tried at least once.
While most of us are familiar with the flavors of gingerbread, the German equivalent is called lebkuchen and Trader Joe’s just dropped a chocolate-covered version shoppers are calling “Delicious!”

To catch you up to speed, lebkuchen is a traditional German holiday cookie made by fermenting the dough before baking. Modern versions of the recipe only call for a one or two-day rest, but originally, the lengthy task of making these festive sweets began as early as November before they were baked in December. The fermentation process creates air bubbles in the dough that give it its signature soft and chewy texture and serves to extend the shelf life of the cookies by weeks (even though they probably won’t last that long.)
Fortunately, if you’re not up to the herculean task of making these yourself, you can snag a box of Trader Joe’s Chocolate Covered Lebkuchen Cookies while supplies last. And judging by comments on the dedicated TJ’s Reddit thread, they won’t be around for too much longer.
OP ibeezindatrapp shared a photo of an adorable box of the chocolate-covered confection, and users were quick to share their thoughts on the seasonal treat.
“I love these so much!! I always look forward to them during the holidays,” expressed one person. “These are delicious! My wife finds the ginger too intense, but she's wrong lol,” quipped another.
While much of the conversation surrounded taste, there were a few people who couldn’t get over the cookies’ texture, with one person saying, “It's like eating gingerbread & chocolate flavored Styrofoam ??”
Texture aside though, most shoppers agree that the warm flavors of cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and ginger, accented with hints of citrus and nuts, make this a seasonal delicacy to reach for again and again. The reported price point for a box of the sweet treats is $3.99, which is more than half the cost of other brands' versions of the cookie.
And, at that low of a price, you can grab this stocking stuffer for everyone in your family (and pick up an extra two boxes just for you.)
