After a blood-pumping bidding war, Rob McElhenney was reported to have lost out on Kylie Kelce's autographed Eagles jacket, which was up for a charitable auction.
The throwback bomber ultimately sold for $100,000, with proceeds going to the NFL team's Autism Foundation. The Mythic Quest star placed a series of bids, catching the attention of Jason and Travis Kelce on last week's episode of their podcast New Heights, but he was believed to have been outbid at $62,000 when the team announced an anonymous donor had made the highest offer by the end of the auction.
It turns out, things aren't always as they seem. The actor made a surprise appearance on the newest episode of New Heights, which dropped on Nov. 29, where he gave the full breakdown of his bidding war for the coveted replica of the bomber once favored by Princess Diana, revealing that the actions of his opponent turned out to be an "inside job."
McElhenney was initially stunned that someone continued to swoop in right behind him, suspecting at one point that it was the team's owner, Jeffrey Lurie. But his wife, Alway Sunny in Philadelphia co-star Kaitlin Olson, had her eyes set on the prize, too, and unbeknownst to each other the two went toe to toe.
It wasn't until McElhenney teased the brothers about his dedication via Twitter, telling them to "refresh the page" to see him overtake his opponent for the first time, and then later flaunting the bid he placed in honor of Jason's jersey number, 62, that Olson realized what was going on.
Eventually, she texted her husband, telling him, "I've been the one bidding against you, bozo," leaving Jason perhaps even more gobsmacked than McElhenney had been over the "inside job."
Olson popped on to chat, immediately chastizing "this moron" for not realizing sooner what was going on. "We live in the same house. This is a foundation that's important to both of us. The jacket looks great on your wife; it's clearly for women—I want it! He mentions nothing about it, I'm like, 'What are you doing?!'"
The Kelces burst into laughter as she heatedly calls him a moron again. "We share a bank account; maybe just fill me in?" She clarified that she was "100 percent on board," but was shocked to "find out on X (Twitter) how much he's bidding."
At some point, he did bring up his frustration in person. In retrospect, Olson's "stone face" should have set off his alarm bells, but he just didn't grasp "the social cues."
The two eventually teamed up to "still have some fun with it." Olson wanted to bid $87,000 in honor of Travis, but McElhenney, a diehard birds fan, immediately shut it down. Instead, they decided $100,000 was a perfect number to donate to a cause and team close to their hearts.
Much to Olson's chagrin, she's stuck with her "dumb sweatshirt" for now, leading Jason to promise on the team's behalf that they could overnight her winnings.
