Trevor Noah is the host of the 2022 Grammys this year, and it seemed nearly impossible that we would make it through the entire ceremony without a joke about Will Smith's Oscars slap heard 'round the world—I mean, it only went down one single week ago, help. Turns out, we didn't have to wait long. The joke came during the opening monologue, as in, we literally didn't even get 10 minutes into the show before there was a "slap" mention. At the end of the monologue, Trevor Noah quipped that tonight, “We’ll be keeping people’s names out of our mouths," which is a riff on what Smith shouted at the Oscars. Sure, clever, I guess!

Unless you've been living under a rock for the last week, you've likely heard that Smith slapped Chris Rock during the 2022 Academy Awards. Here's a quick TL;DR: Chris took the stage to present the award for Best Documentary, and he made a joke ahead of the presentation at Jada Pinkett Smith's expense. He said he couldn't wait to see G.I. Jane 2, in reference to Jada's shaved head. Jada has been vocal about her struggles with alopecia, which causes hair loss. Will didn't like the joke, so he got up on stage and slapped Chris. Then, he went back to his seat and yelled, "Keep my wife's name out of your f*cking mouth" twice. About 30 minutes later, Will accepted his award for Best Actor. It was a lot!

In the week since the slap happened, the internet has not been able to stop talking about it. And it looks like the repercussions for Will are still to come. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, who puts on the Oscars, is still debating what to do about Will's membership. Will has apologized publicly and resigned from the Academy, but the news cycle about the slap shows no sign of slowing down.

Which is why it seemed inevitable that someone would make a joke about it at the Grammys—I mean, again, I'm still brushing the crumbs off my lap from the Oscars. The two two awards shows are back-to-back! I haven't had a good night sleep since!
