I Tried Drew Barrymore's Pizza Salad That Has Everyone Talking

Do you want to play a game? No, not literally. But that was the question posed to Drew Barrymore’s character, Casey Becker during the opening scene of the horror classic, Scream. And although she did not live long enough to enjoy her popcorn, this was the first time I witnessed the Hollywood movie star attempt to prepare anything in the kitchen, even though it was only on film.

But since then, Drew’s kitchen game has gone beyond the big screen and into the homes of her beloved fans. She has her recipes featured on The Drew Barrymore Show, her own line of cookware and lately she’s also shared her food ideas directly with her fans on social media.

And that's how I stumbled upon a recipe that caught my eye but was receiving some mixed reviews. That recipe is for Drew Barrymore’s Pizza Salad. Some seemed to love it, others seemed to hate it, and that’s why I decided to add this “Firestarter” of a recipe to my must-try list.

Ingredients for Drew Barrymore’s Pizza Salad

The list of ingredients can actually get as basic or as complicated as your tastebuds desire. For your base you want to go with a pizza that you think would taste good on a salad (I went with a steak and mushroom frozen pizza from Publix). From there you need your favorite salad ingredients. For me that was romaine lettuce, an avocado, red onion, cucumber, and red and green bell peppers.

How to Make Drew Barrymore’s Pizza Salad

It’s almost as simple as making Jiffy pop popcorn on the stovetop (that’s another Scream reference). First grab a slice of pizza. Then with a knife or fork, scrape all of the pizza toppings, cheese included, off the pizza slice and into a large bowl or plate. Then add in your favorite salad ingredients. Toss it all together, and voila (I guess) you now have yourself a “pizza salad.”

What I Thought of Drew Barrymore’s Pizza Salad

Pizza never asked to be salad and I feel that it’s unfair to judge it as such. But now that we're here, and this is what I do, let’s do it. Do you remember the movie 2001 cult classic, Donnie Darko, where Drew Barrymore co-starred as Donnie’s teacher, Karen Pomeroy? Well, this pizza recipe is a lot like the plot from that movie. There’s something about it but you just can’t put your finger on it. It’s kind of good, but it's not all that satisfying.

The more pizza salad you eat, the more confused you become. And after it's done, you’re left with only questions, like “What did I just eat? Who made this? And why did they make it?

That’s what I thought about this pizza salad. It’s kind of like pizza but not quite. And the memory of real pizza only makes you long for what you know you’re missing.

Tips for Making Drew Barrymore’s Pizza Salad

Save yourself the trouble and don’t make it. If you want a pizza, get a pizza. If you want a salad, get a salad. But if you want your salad to taste like pizza, just add some meat and cheese to it. But whatever you do, leave the pizza out of it. In fact, pretend like you’re Drew playing Lucy Whitmore in 50 First Dates and let's forget this whole thing ever happened.
