Try Not to Cringe at Neil Patrick Harris's Exceptionally Awkward Twitter Exchange

The theater kids got together last night for the annual Tony Awards—and just like in high school, there was some serious drama.

Musical theater veteran Neil Patrick Harris took it upon himself to live-tweet through the ceremony—and it wasn’t all praise.

The How I Met Your Mother star made a jab about “the woman in the top hat backstage,” of whom his 7-year-old son Gideon “remarked” that she said “like” and “oh my god” a lot, apparently unaware that the woman in question was Crazy Ex-Girlfriend star and second-time Tonys backstage host Rachel Bloom.

First off, it’s pretty surprising that someone so deeply entrenched in the world of musical theater (NPH picked up a Tony himself in 2014 for his role in Hedwig and the Angry Inch) doesn’t know the pioneering star of The CW’s dramedy/musical series.

But OK, opinions aside, here’s what Rachel had to say:

“I’m a big fan of yours. We’ve met numerous times and my husband, Dan Gregor, wrote for How I Met Your Mother for 5 years. Notably, he wrote the episode where your character finally meets his father.”

So … it looks like NPH just pulled the ultimate Mariah Carey.

He had the good sense to respond, but honestly, what could he possibly say to lessen the blow?

Unsurprisingly, Twitter had some thoughts:
