Turn A Watermelon Into A Drinking Vessel

Turn A Watermelon Into A Drinking Vessel

As if the Internet needed one more clever way to refashion a watermelon: We've turned the sweet summer melon into a keg, one massive Jell-O shot, shot glasses, and now a JUG (can't stop, won't stop). This idea came to me from the Italian food site Agrodolce, which posted an amazing video of a DIY watermelon jug earlier this week. The one problem? They didn't add alcohol to the fresh juice like true summer boozehounds (read: us). So we took the matter into our own hands and made it exactly how we like it: Spiked. Here's how to turn watermelon into a game-CHANGER.

1. CUT A HOLE IN THE TOP OF YOUR WATERMELON

You want the hole to be large enough for an immersion blender or hand mixer to fit inside. Then use a knife to jimmy off the top piece and discard.

2. BLEND WATERMELON

This is the most incredible hack: Stick your hand blender inside the hole and blend on medium-high. The fruit is soft enough and has enough water content to easily liquefy in under two minutes.

3. MAKE A POUR SPOUT

This is the trickiest part, but it's still not that tricky. You want a funnel that will fit tightly in the watermelon hole and span the length of it because the watermelon juice will want to get everywhere (it's sneaky like that). I used the top of a plastic cup, curling it around the sides of the hole and sticking the sharp plastic sides into the rind. A little juice will probably still go rogue, but not enough to care about.

4. SPIKE IT

Pour some vodka in there. How much? You decide. Shake it up to make sure your first sip isn't purely alcohol.

5. POUR

A steady hand wins the race—be gentle! Garnish with lime. Have all the fun.
