All sewing projects — replacing a button, hemming a pair of pants, stitching a quilt by hand, you name it — have the same simple start. But if you don't take the time to learn how to thread a needle the right way, it can actually take up more time and well, energy, than necessary. That's why we turned to expert sewer Amanda Perna, who is also the fashion designer behind The House of Perna and a Project Runway alum, to walk us through a step-by-step tutorial, sharing all of her best tips and tricks along the way.

Sure, needle threaders exist to help you put thread through the eye of the needle. But before you pick up yet another tool to add to your ever-growing sewing kit, set aside a few minutes to try out this technique, no matter if you're a beginner or expert in need of a refresh.

When it comes to picking your needle and thread, follow this general rule: Go for a smaller needle and thinner thread for satin, silk or delicate fabrics; a bigger needle and thicker thread is best for linen, cotton and more durable fabrics. Keep in mind that every sewer (even Amanda!) runs into a few hiccups every now and again — like a frayed thread or a needle too small for the eye to see — so patience is key.

Of course, once you master this basic skill, you may feel inspired to take your hobby up a notch. In that case, invest in one of The Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab's best sewing machines, which they've tested for varying needs, budgets and skill levels. Now, let's get to it!

Tools You'll Need

  • Needle: Any size needle works, but keep in mind that if you're using a thicker thread, you'll want a bigger needle with a wider eye.

  • Thread: Thinner thread is better suited for silk or delicate fabrics. You'll only need about an arm's length to thread your needle.

How to Thread a Needle

  • Step 1: Twist thread around the top part of the needle, near the eye.

  • Step 3: Stick looped thread into the eye of the needle.

  • Step 4: If the thread frays, pinch it down until flat and pull it out through the eye.

  • Step 5: Double the thread up, then make the ends neat and tie together with a single loop. Pull it tight. If you're using a thinner thread, repeat this step, making sure that the knots overlap.
