Is there anyone more committed to the bit than Golden Globe winner Austin Butler?

The actor won his first Golden Globe tonight for Best Actor in a Drama Motion Picture, which recognized his breakout performance as the titular character and the king of rock and roll in Baz Luhrmann's Elvis. While Butler gave a touching acceptance speech that thanked his family, costars, and—of course—Elvis Presley himself, fans on Twitter couldn't help but notice he was still speaking with the Southern affectation he drawls out in the 2022 film.

"I just think it's so cool that austin butler underwent complete ego death for a baz luhrmann joint," one person jokingly observed on Twitter. "Why does Austin Butler sound like George W. Bush," another asked.

Butler addressed the frenzy over his brand-spanking-new voice backstage, according to Vulture writer Nate Jones. "I don't think I sound like him much, but I've heard it enough that I guess it's true," he reportedly said, comparing it to someone who acquires a new accent while living in a foreign country. "It's in my DNA now."

Ahead, the funniest Twitter reactions to Butler's speech and new voice.

During his acceptance speech, Butler thanked Luhrmann and costar Tom Hanks for their guidance on set. "I owe this to a bold, visionary filmmaker who allowed me the experience to take risks and I always knew I would be supported. I love you, Baz Luhrmann," he said. "Thank you for believing in me in those moments that I didn't even believe in myself. I'm so grateful to you. I also want to thank my dance partner, the greatest dance partner I could have ever hoped for, Mr. Tom Hanks."

He also paid homage to the late Presley, concluding, "Lastly, Elvis Presley himself, you are an icon and a rebel. I love you so much. Thank you. You are remembered, and I will never forget, thank you!"
