These Two '90 Day Fiancé' Couples Just Confirmed They're Pregnant—Here's Our Exclusive Convo with Them!
One of the couples featured on TLC's guilty pleasure smash-hit 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days had a rollercoaster season. Paul Staehle and Karine Martins dealt with a miscarriage, cheating scandals, and even a potential divorce. But on the tell-all season finale Sunday night, the couple revealed some good news: Karine is pregnant again.
“I’m super happy,” Karine told host Shaun Robinson via Skype. "But at the same time I’m sad and scared that it won’t work out again.”
Elizabeth Potthast and Andrei Castravet of the fifth season of 90 Day Fiancé are also expecting their first child together. The couple revealed the news exclusively to Cosmopolitan.
Both Paul and Karine and Elizabeth and Andrei documented their long-distance relationships on the TLC reality TV franchise, and viewers watched them struggle to stay together after families and fights got in the way.
Paul, from Kentucky, and Karine, from Brazil, didn’t even speak the same language, and communicated via a translating app. (No, really-and that is the least crazy-seeming thing about their courtship. If you haven't binge-watched their Before season yet, do. It. Now.) Elizabeth, from Florida, and Andrei, from Moldova, dealt with cultural differences like Andrei wanting to be the head of the household, which Elizabeth’s family did not like.
But soon, both pairs will begin new journeys into parenthood. Here, they share what’s happened since they first found out they were expecting.
Paul and Karine
In June, in Karine’s native Brazil, the 22-year-old looked at her husband, Paul, 35, in disbelief after taking several pregnancy tests. They all came back positive. She'd had two miscarriages in less than a year-one documented on 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days-and Karine could not believe she was pregnant a third time. Today, she is four months pregnant with a baby boy.
“This baby is a surprise blessing,” Paul told me.
Even after having an ultrasound, the couple feared this pregnancy would meet the same fate as the other two.
"The miscarriages were something neither of us will ever forget," Paul says. "It brought us even closer together as we put aside arguments and disagreements to comfort one another. It is a tragic life moment no one should have to endure.”
The couple says doctors warned them to wait six months after the miscarriage before getting pregnant again. Karine got pregnant before the six month mark, so that added to the stress.
“We were very nervous,” Paul says. “But we are in the second trimester with this current pregnancy."
Over the summer, the reality stars posted a picture of Karine’s baby bump before they were fully ready to announce their news to the public. But fans on social media immediately noticed and reposted the image in the Instagram fan account below.
“That was an accident,” Paul says. “I had a new phone. Karine was sharing photos with her family and the options were in English, and the social media options accidentally got selected. We quickly removed the photos, but apparently not quickly enough.”
Throughout Karine's pregnancy, Paul has traveled back and forth between the U.S. and Brazil. But now, Karine is thinking of joining him in the States full-time.
“She wants to test out medical facilities and medicine in the U.S. to see which she prefers and which will be best for our child,” Paul says. "Then she will decide which country is best.”
In the meantime, Paul and Karine say they are excited to become parents, and Paul says they are “very grateful for this healthy pregnancy.”
Elizabeth and Andrei
In December 2017, 90 Day Fiancé fans saw Elizabeth Potthast and Andrei Castravet argue over Elizabeth's bachelorette party plans because they didn't adhere to Andrei's traditional and conservative ways.
During the getaway, Elizabeth's sisters hid her phone to keep her from communicating with Andrei, and he later met with Elizabeth's older sister, Jen, to try and prove he wasn't controlling.
That same month, the couple tied the knot despite their family disputes.
And now, they are expecting their first child.
Elizabeth, 28, found out she was pregnant in May, just a few months after the couple's season of 90 Day Fiancé stopped airing. She was taking a road trip through Florida with Andrei, 32, when she noticed she had no appetite and felt ill.
“I was feeling really foggy-headed and weird. I kept telling Andrei, 'I think pregnant! I think pregnant,'” Elizabeth says.
When Elizabeth got home, she took a pregnancy test. Once she read the results, Elizabeth put her hand over her mouth, jumped back, and told Andrei abashedly, “Babe? I’m pregnant.”
“I was like, No way,” Andrei, 32, says. “It was a total surprise. We didn’t plan it.”
After Elizabeth confirmed her pregnancy at a doctor's visit, she knew she had to break the news to her dad. But 90 Day Fiancé fans will recall he wasn’t always the biggest fan of Andrei, so Elizabeth was concerned.
“Our relationship fluctuates,” Andrei says. “Lately it has not been so good. We have some disagreements. But we have some good times sometimes, as well.”
But Elizabeth's dad has fully embraced his new grandchild. The family recently got together for a gender reveal party, where Elizabeth and Andrei found out they are expecting a girl, and Elizabeth's father was there.
“Everyone was screaming,” Elizabeth says. “Most of my family counted on it being a girl, and everybody was right. We just kind of had this gut feeling.”
For now, the couple plans to stay in Tampa until their daughter is born, but have thought about moving away after. But since Andrei is still waiting for his green card, his native country, Moldova, is out of the question-for now.
Still, the couple plans to have a second wedding there next year and to visit frequently so the kids "know their dad’s culture, make sure that they’re fluent, and worldly.”
Like Karine and Paul, Andrei and Elizabeth's pregnancy was almost spoiled. This time, by a member of Elizabeth's extended family.
On October 1, her brother-in-law, Orlando Davis, who hosts his own radio show, was asked by a caller if he likes Andrei. “He's a good guy, he takes care of his wife, they got a baby coming,” Orlando responds in the video below.
“I was extremely, extremely upset, and I still am,” Elizabeth says of the leaked news. “We’ve done such a good job of keeping it hidden. We literally never talk to him, and we feel like he probably saw an opportunity to get some ratings on his show. We never said he could say anything.”
“The question was totally different,” Andrei adds. “He had a question, supposedly from a fan, and it was, ‘Does he like me or not?’ I don’t know why he had to reveal.”
But now that the news is officially confirmed, they are excited to be more open with the public.
"We’re really happy to be able to have the opportunity to share our journey, and show people that it is possible to do a long-distance relationship," Elizabeth says.
The next season of 90 Day Fiancé premieres Sunday, October 21 on TLC.
