Two Emperor Penguins in Antarctica Waddled Upon a Camera and Took The Best “Selfie”
The story of the Internet’s newest obsession begins unlike any other: miles away from the closest human outpost, on a piece of sea ice floating off the coast of Antarctica. It’s here, in perhaps the world’s most unlikely place, where two emperor penguins recently stumbled upon a camera.
And what did they do? They took a selfie, of course!
The Australian Antarctic Division shared the hilarious, 38-second video on social media Thursday. The feather-filled footage was captured by one of the group’s expeditioners, who placed the camera on the ground near the Auster Rookery—home to a large emperor penguin colony, The Washington Post reports.
“Australian Antarctic expeditioner, Eddie Gault, left the camera on the ice when visiting the rookery, and it didn’t take long for the naturally curious birds to seize the opportunity for a selfie,” The Australian Antarctic Division wrote on its Facebook page alongside the now-viral clip.
OK, so it’s not technically a selfie, but the clip does start after one penguin kicks the camera so it focuses directly on its face. In no time, another penguin joins, and the two chirp and cock their heads inquisitively while examining the strange piece of machinery.
