In this video, Sam and Caitríona share that there are new cast members, new sets and new crew, but that they are welcoming back some oldies but goodies, too. And two of those happen to be Jamie’s adopted son Fergus (César Domboy) and his wife Marsali (Lauren Lyle), who also happens to be Jamie’s stepdaughter.
The young married couple was missing in action in Season 7. We last saw them in season 6 when they made the decision to leave Fraser's Ridge to find a better life for their family, including their son Henri-Christian, who had been dealing with settlers saying his dwarfism was a punishment from God. Fergus was overcome with shame and attempted to take his own life, but Jamie stopped him and arranged a new start for him in New Bern. Per the above video, they are back for Season 8.

Part of the reason for their absence is story dictated, but it was also because Lauren headlined the BritBox series, Karen Pirie, based on the thrilling crime novels by Val McDermid, as well as the thriller Mercy Falls and the drama The Outrun.

In Season 8 of Outlander, the Revolutionary War will be in full swing. Jamie and Claire will return from Scotland and be caught up in it in some form or another, Roger and Brianna will have come back from the future trying to find their place in the 18th century, and Young Ian will either be married or engaged.

Since Jamie and Claire don’t return to America together, when Claire returns from Scotland in the spring of 1778, she stays with Fergus and Marsali and their children in Philadelphia, where Fergus has opened up a printing business, while awaiting Jamie's return. Later they will move south to Savannah and Charleston.
Season 8—with its 10 episodes—will most likely be adapted from Diana Gabaldon’s books eight and nine in the Outlander series—Written in My Own Heart's Blood and Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, respectively.
