Tyra Banks wanted to lose 30 pounds before posing in a bikini for 'Sports Illustrated'
Tyra Banks looks incredible on the cover of Sports Illustrated — but she admitted that she didn’t reach her goal weight before the shoot. And instead of that being shamed, it was celebrated.
“I thought I was gonna lose 30 pounds, and come back and look like that cover from 1997,” Banks tells Yahoo Lifestyle on the BUILD series stage,
“And I got to the fitting and went to MJ [Day]’s hotel room and I had like a big sundress on, and I’m like, ‘MJ, I was gonna lose a bunch of weight and I didn’t.’”
Day, who has strived to make the issue truly inclusive, simply told the model that they would be showcasing — and even honoring — her body as is.
“She’s like, ‘I am so excited that you didn’t. I think it’s so much better, I think it’s a better message, it’s who you are now,’” Banks recalled of her conversation with Day, the editor of the magazine. “She was like, ‘No, let’s celebrate that.’ And I was like, ‘Damn, okay.’ So it made me feel good.”
