UAH parents and students finish orientation, prepare for freshman move-in

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – August marks the start of a new school year at colleges across Alabama. And for many parents, it means moving freshmen into their dorms.

UAH Strategic Communications Vice President Kristina Hendrix says orientation helps calm parental nerves and get them excited about moving in.

“They really want to know how to get that full life cycle experience while they’re on campus and make sure their student is taken care of,” Hendrix said.

Although UAH classes don’t start until Aug. 21, regular move-in starts on Aug. 15th.

Hendrix says volunteers will be around campus to check in students and assist with moving.

“We have a number of student organizations here on campus that do help our students move in, but then we also invite the community,” Hendrix said.

Hendrix says dollies, hand trucks and U-Hauls are all welcome. Dumpsters will also be available if students need to throw out trash.

“We do ask them that they’re just being safe when they do come on campus with their materials, Hendrix said.”

Faith Hollingsworth is getting ready to move in with her only daughter at UAH. She says parent groups on Facebook have been a big help in answering questions ahead of August.

“Their questions are usually my questions and a lot of those parents have already gone through orientation,” Hollingsworth said. “So I feel like I’m kind of getting a jump on what to expect and what we need to do even before orientation because they’ve already been through that.”

Hendrix says UAH is still looking for volunteers to help out at move-in.  Students and outside organizations are both eligible to volunteer.
