'Unattended & unruly children will be arrested & sold as slaves': Colorado restaurant apologizes after coming under fire for racist sign
A Colorado restaurant has come under fire after it displayed a restroom sign saying unruly children would be sold as slaves.
The Lone Spur Cafe in Durango, Colo., faced a backlash from customers who found it appalling after seeing the sign in its bathroom, the Durango Herald reported.
“Unattended & unruly children will be arrested & sold as slaves,” it read.
Nikki Moss, an African-American woman who says her family is descended from slaves, was not amused to see the message when she ate at the establishment on Sept. 9.
“I was shocked to see that sign,” she told the Durango Herald.
After complaining to the staff, she was disappointed to learn the sign was still there two weeks later. Moss’s friend Claire Raines told the Durango Herald that when she ate at the restaurant on Monday, the sign was still up.
“[Moss] and I both believe that if something bothers you and you can do something about it or even just try to do something about it, you should,” Raines said in an interview with the paper.
The restaurant’s CEO, Cory Farley, has since apologized for the poster and said his staff had planned to discuss the sign’s removal with him. He said he intends to contact Moss to apologize.
“Our intent is never to be offensive or insensitive to anyone,” he told the Durango Herald.
The sign has since been removed from the restaurant.
