Understanding the Pelotonia arrow: The story behind the organization's symbol

Prepare for crowds and over 6,000 cyclists this weekend as Pelotonia's Ride Weekend returns, along with the iconic arrow.

Each rider has pledged to make a fundraising commitment and will be riding in support of Pelotonia's "One Goal" to end cancer by supporting innovative research.

Like an arrow — the organization's logo — Pelotonia has been aiming to represent constant movement toward this vision since its founding in 2009, said Joe Apgar, Pelotonia's CEO.

"The origin of the name 'Pelotonia' is from the word peloton, which is the group of cyclists that can go faster together," Apgar said.

"The idea was that we could move faster toward ending cancer together as a community than we can alone... We actually rebrand (the arrow) with a new campaign every year. So this year's arrow is sort of a gradient green from left to right, really trying to signal progress and the forward motion of the progress that's happening."
