The unhealthy habit that contributed to Jennifer Lawrence and Darren Aronofsky's split
Jennifer Lawrence is dropping some hints as to why she and Darren Aronofsky might have broken up.
The actress — who started dating the director while working on Mother! — is making the press rounds ahead of awards season and she was asked about how she handled the negative reviews. While critics were split, the film received a rare F cinemascore from audiences. Naturally, that created a bit of a rift in their relationship.
“Normally, I promote a movie, you put the work in to promoting it, ask people to go see it, and then it’s just kind of out of your hands. I normally just kind of let it go,” Lawrence told Adam Sandler while participating in Variety‘s Actors on Actors series. “Dating the director was different, because we’d be on the tour together. I’d come back to the hotel, and the last thing I want to talk about or think about is a movie.”
That wasn’t the case for Aronofsky.
“He comes back from the tour, and that’s all he wants to talk about,” she explained. “I get it, it’s his baby. He wrote it; he conceived it; he directed it. I was doing double duty trying to be a supportive partner while also being like, ‘Can I please, for the love of God, not think about Mother! for one second?’”
Again, that’s not exactly what the director/boyfriend had in mind.
“And then he would start reading me reviews, and I finally was like, ‘It’s not healthy. I’m not going to do it, because if I read it, I start getting defensive,’” she said. “Especially because it’s my man. I don’t want to sound in an interview that I’m defending what we’re doing in any way. It’s awesome, what we did. The people who hate it really hate it. But it’s nothing that needs to be defended. If I read a negative review, I just feel defensive.”
Aronofsky and Lawrence split last month after about a year of dating; however, things are clearly amicable. They sat together at the Governors Awards two weeks ago, after they were already broken up. During their relationship, they were relatively low-key, and even on the press tour tended to keep any soundbites mostly professional.
A few weeks ago, Lawrence shared how sparks flew between the pair at first.
“I had a crush on him when he pitched to me,” she told the Hollywood Reporter, “and that was like a year before we started rehearsing, but he was a professional, which only made it worse for me. So we just kind of formed a friendship. He knew how I felt, he never told me how he felt — I mean, I assumed — but we just formed a friendship, and then the friendship turned into a partnership for the movie once we started working, and then, when the movie was done, I was like, ‘All right, you’re my boyfriend!’ And he was like, ‘All right, I’m your boyfriend.'”
Lawrence admitted that they frequently disagreed about how to sell the movie. “I don’t think any audience member should go in blindly,” she said. “Darren and I disagree on that constantly.”
Aronofsky was previously in a nine-year relationship with Rachel Weisz — they share one son — but they split in 2010. Weisz went on to marry Daniel Craig. Lawrence has dated Coldplay’s Chris Martin and actor Nicholas Hoult.
