Color coordinating your Christmas tree can be a hassle—especially if you ever decide you want to change your color scheme.

Thankfully, TikTok creator @illustriousandy has a solution. Her video has nearly 400,000 views, and for good reason: she has created a hack that not only saves Christmas decoration-lovers their hard-earned time, but also saves them from buying an entirely new set of Christmas ornaments.

To recreate her DIY, you’ll need your bulb ornaments from last year and some balloons in the color you want your “new” ornaments to be. You’ll need to start by taking the ornament cap—that small piece of metal, usually silver or gold, that connects your ornament to an ornament hook—off the bulb ornaments. Next, pivot to your balloons: cut off the elastic bit at the end of your balloons.

Now, for the fun part: wrap your balloon around your naked bulb ornament. Once you have the ornament entirely inside the balloon, make sure that the opening of the balloon matches up with the opening of your ornament. Snap the top of the ornament back on, tucking any excess balloon fabric back into the ornament, and, voila! Your ornaments are all a different color.

Other TikTok users commented on the video and pointed out that you don’t just have to use a single color balloon to use this hack—you can do it with cow print balloons, glow-in-the-dark balloons, or black light-reactive neon balloons to really put on a show with your tree this year.

“I’m definitely one of girlys who want a different color scheme every year but don’t wanna rebuy the same decorations different colors,” another person wrote, echoing dozens of other thankful TikTok users looking for holiday hacks.

Beyond aesthetics, there are other smart reasons to wrap your ornaments ahead of this Christmas season, especially if you have small children or a particularly frisky kitten who might be interested in knocking a few ornaments to the ground.

“I don't know if it's just me, but this is genius, especially if they're glass and accidentally break,” one TikTok user wrote. “The broken pieces would possibly stay inside.”

This hack won’t work on all of your ornaments, though. For instance, if your ornament is in a fun shape, the balloon will likely not be able to trace the entire outline of that shape. So, for special ornaments, you’re better off hanging them as they are.

And if you’re in the market for one or two additional ornaments to jazz up your tree after completing this DIY, there are plenty of options out there, from the detailed and beautiful Magnolia Greenhouse Ornament to the absolutely adorable holiday collection at Crate & Barrel.

No matter how you choose to decorate this season, if you decide to go the monochrome route, consider a hack like this to save money and ornaments.
