Supervise children when swimming at all times

Here are tips from the American Red Cross to ensure you and your family stay safe when swimming this summer:

? Supervise children while swimming at all times.

? Never swim alone, and always have a swimming buddy with you.

? Make sure to swim in designated areas where lifeguards are present. If a lifeguard is present, it is still important to watch over your children, no matter how well they can swim.

? Never entrust a child to watch over another child.

? Teach children to always ask permission before going near water.

? In group settings, assign a water watcher.

? Avoid distractions such as cellphone use.

Smart precautions, methods of protection

? Stay within arm's reach of inexperienced swimmers when swimming.

? Do not rely on life jackets alone. U.S. Coast Guard-approved jackets should be worn by inexperienced swimmers.

? Never substitute adult supervision with the use of floaties or other inflatables.

? Secure the pool in your home or backyard with protective barriers to prevent unsupervised water access. The majority of children who have died in home pools did so outside of swim time.

What to do during a water emergency

? Before swimming, ensure the entire family, including yourself, knows how to swim well.

? If a child goes missing, check the water immediately.

? In the case of an emergency, call 911 or your local emergency number.

? Emergency equipment to have on you when swimming includes a cell phone, a first aid kit, life jackets, and reaching or throwing equipment.

? Enroll in Red Cross water orientation and learn to swim courses. You can also enroll in pool safety, water safety, first aid and CPR/AED courses.
