Video of U.S. airman helping 71-year-old woman with a walker and carrying groceries goes viral: 'Don't let anyone be forgotten'
A video of a U.S. airman, stationed at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City, helping an elderly woman — who was using a walker and carrying her groceries — get home has gone viral. Senior Airman Jibril Jennings, who was unaware someone was filming his act of kindness, is now being hailed as a hero online.
On Wednesday, as temperatures reached 100-degrees in Oklahoma City, Janice Hall, 71, was preparing to walk two miles back to her home with all of the groceries she purchased at Walmart.
Instead, Jennings pulled over and asked her if she would like a ride. Hall, who says she enjoys the exercise her walks provided and isn't bothered by the heat, was still happy to accept Jennings' offer. A woman in her car saw Jennings loading Hall's groceries into the trunk of his car and filmed the encounter.
"The way that people were driving, I didn't think that anyone was recording," Jennings told KWTV. "I didn't even realize that there was anyone around me until someone stopped, parked behind us and put their hazards on while I was helping load stuff into [the] car."
On their drive to Hall's house, Jennings said a friendship was instantly formed, and that the woman reminded him of his own grandmother.
Jennings then helped Hall bring her groceries inside and put them away.
“That man was really a sweet guy,” said Hall. “[I] just couldn't believe it.”
At her home, Jennings also noticed that her ramp outside was broken and plans to return with a few airmen to repair it for her.
He's being called a hero online, but he believes if that qualifies him as a hero, "then anybody can be a hero."
"Don’t let anyone be forgotten," Jennings told KOCO. "Don’t let anyone be ignored."
