Utah Treasure Hunt undiscovered a month later, organizers drop new hints

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — It’s nearing a month since the fifth annual Utah Treasure Hunt started, and it still remains undiscovered. Each Friday the $25K still isn’t found, organizers of the hunt release hints to help eager searchers.

In June, this year’s Utah Treasure Hunt kicked off with a unique element. For the first time, the riddle for the treasure hunt was in another language — Spanish. Organizers David Cline and John Maxim explained they try to make the hunt a little bit different each year. They said over the years, they’ve received messages requesting a poem in Spanish, and are excited to have put one together.

“A lot of the movies and stuff that we came up with like ‘The Goonies,’ for example, the treasure map is all in Spanish — so it’s not that weird for us to be like, hey, this time the treasure is in Spanish,” Maxim told ABC4.com.

Last year, it took about two months before anyone found the treasure, the longest it has taken for the annual summer hunt.

In the email with this week’s hints, organizers wrote: “We both thought the chest would have been found by now because we think it’s a little easier than last year. But the poem hunt can be tricky. Hopefully these hints can help.”

Utah Treasure Hunt 2024 Riddle:

Hint #1

Cline and Maxim were featured on the Cache Me Outside podcast earlier this week. For hint #1, they included an image that breaks down hints they discussed on the episode, which you can listen to online.

Hint #2

Hint #2 reads: “The word sombra in the poem is referring to the shadow of something on Google Maps Satellite view. We’ve had some questions about this. We used the most recent satellite view and whether you are on the mobile app, or desktop, or using multiple browsers, the shadow should be the same. Also, you just need a general direction from the shadow, not an exact heading.”

Hint #3

“You are still in the car at this point in the poem,” hint number 3 says, with the following image.

Bonus Hint:

A bonus hint reads: “The font we use in the poem has nothing to do with the solve. The font we always use didn’t have Spanish accents so we had to substitute with another font. But that has nothing to do with the solve.”
