Vanessa Lachey Leaves Her Husband Notes In Lipstick on the Bathroom Mirror, And It's Adorable
EMBARGOED UNTIL 8/20
Vanessa Lachey knows a thing or two about relationships. Between watching multiple couples get engaged on the show she hosts, Love Is Blind — where couples try to fall in love without meeting face-to-face — and her 14-year marriage to her Love Is Blind co-host, Nick Lachey, she's seen more than her fair share of what it takes to really make love work. "Of course we’re always learning as a married couple," Lachey tells Woman's Day. "But we were drawn to the show because the idea of the show was like our courtship."
Of course, the show isn't exactly like her and Nick's courtship, since the two did meet in person before things took a turn towards serious. But after getting to know each other on the set of his music video for "What's Left of Me," they each went back to their respective homes 3,000 miles away — hers in New York and his in Los Angeles. That meant their courtship involved a slew of phone calls and late-night chats, which Lachey says helped the couple build a strong foundation before they were together in person.
But sustaining a relationship is about more than relying on that foundation: it's about building on it. And a big part of developing her relationship over the years is through open lines of communication. "I write letters to Nick on the mirror in lipstick," Lachey says. "I do it in the morning, so when he comes into the bathroom to brush his teeth he sees it."
And this sweet gesture of sharing messages extends beyond just her romantic partnership — Lachey also writes notes to her children. "It's a shorthand of love," she says. "It's an easy way for us as parents to remind our kids that they are incredible; that we do see them and we do acknowledge them."
Though her messages to Nick are written in lipstick, Lachey prefers something a little sweeter for her kids: Rice Krispies Treats. And since she's had so much fun leaving messages of love and encouragement to her kids on Rice Krispies Treats wrappers, she's partnered with the brand for its limited edition "Love in Case of" kits, which help parents identify key moments throughout the school year when their kids might be in need of a little extra love, attention, and encouragement.
"There’s a communication gap right now between parents and kids, in life in general and especially during these times," she says. "So any way we can be positive and remind the kids how much we love them and how much we’re there for them, is great."
It's hard to know what's sweeter, the thoughtful message or the tasty treat!
