Vera Wang's latest bridal collection is full of French-inspired silhouettes
Vera Wang has been America’s iconic bridal designer for decades, and at 68, she is still at the top of her game. For her Fall 2018 collection, Wang dictates a new style of wedding dresses inspired by 18th-century French dressing.
The new collection features dresses with panniers, or side hoops, that help extend the width of the dress’s skirt — a popular trend seen throughout the 1600s and 1700s — though Wang’s version is not as dramatic as those worn back then.
Both Chantilly and macramé lace were incorporated throughout the collection — on the bodices, sleeves, and skirts — embracing a slight bohemian style of bridal dressing. Dresses either fell loosely over the body like a slip dress or ballooned outward like a gown that Marie Antoinette might have worn in her day. In further playing off of the French style of dress, Wang exposed what would have remained hidden by French women underneath their garments. She designed silk corsets and peplum garters that are to be worn on the outside of the wedding dresses.
The collection’s look book was shot entirely in black-and-white by famed fashion photographer Patrick Demarchelier at the Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris. The hair on the models was left long, stringy, and undone-looking. Very little makeup was visible other than smoldering eyeliner and shadow.
