Severely injured veteran receives new home: "It's a blessing"

An Army veteran who was severely injured during a tour in Iraq has received keys to a new home, which was specially designed for his injuries by Homes for Our Troops.

In 2007, Army Specialist Adam Putt deployed as a rifleman with the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry, 3rd Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division to Baghdad, Iraq.

Horrifyingly, just one month into his deployment, he was hit with an improvised explosive device. Not only did the blast kill several members of his division, SPC Putt lost both of his legs.

Adam usually wears his prosthetics throughout the day, but when at home he prefers his wheelchair. On Homes for Our Troops website he explains that having a wheelchair-accessible home will be a blessing. He is most looking forward to having an adapted bathroom and kitchen. His wheelchair cannot fit in several rooms in his current home, making it difficult to do routine activities like showering or preparing a meal.

Organizers told KFOR that the new home includes lower countertops, and other items that make life with a wheelchair a bit easier.

“Injured Veterans lose their mission and goals, not just limbs. In this home I will regain my freedom and independence, enabling me to carry on another mission,” Putt said. “Having a new home gives me the freedom to pursue my education and enjoy activities with my children.”
