Victoria Beckham Breaks Silence on David's Alleged Affair: 'It Was The Hardest Period for Us'
David and Victoria Beckham are opening up for the first time about the "hardest period" in their relationship.
The couple, who have been married since 1999, addressed the former pro soccer player's alleged 2004 affair in connection with a woman named Rebecca Loos, which at the time, caused them to become a major target of public discourse as a result of the scandal.
Loos claimed that she and the English athlete were involved for three months, which was never corroborated and was dismissed by David back then as "ludicrous."
Now, in a new four-part Netflix documentary entitled Beckham, which chronicles the rise of David's sports career, the fashion designer broke her silence on the infidelity claims and subsequent media fiasco.
Emotionally discussing how deeply the rumors cut, the former Spice Girls singer said, “I can’t even begin to tell you how hard it was, and how it affected me.”
She also described it as being "one hundred percent" the most difficult time in their marriage. "It was the hardest period for us because it felt like the world was against us. And here’s the thing, we were against each other, if I’m being completely honest."
“Up until Madrid, sometimes it felt like us against everybody else but we were together, we were connected, we had each other. But when we were in Spain it didn’t really feel like we had each other either. And that’s sad,” Victoria expressed.
In a separate interview for the project, David shared his own thoughts, recalling, “It was the first time that me and Victoria had been put under that kind of pressure in our marriage,” as a video montage displayed countless front-page headlines about the allegations.
It all took place at a tumultuous transition time for the pair, whose marriage was already under intense scrutiny after David made the controversial move from Manchester United to Real Madrid. Reports alleged that Victoria was reluctant to move to Spain, claiming she disliked the food and was selective about which school their children attended.
The fourth and final episode of the limited series finds both David and Victoria becoming tearful as they look back on the whole ordeal—a situation, to be clear, that they have always vehemently denied ever even happened.
“I don’t know how we got through it, in all honesty," the sports star admitted. "Victoria's everything to me. To see her hurt was incredibly difficult, but we’re fighters. And at that time we needed to fight for each other; we needed to fight for our family. And what we had was worth fighting for. But ultimately, it’s our private life."
He continued: “There were some days I would wake up and think, 'how am I gonna go to work, how am I gonna walk onto that training pitch, how am I gonna look as though nothing’s wrong?' I felt physically sick every day when I opened my eyes – 'how am I gonna do this?’”
As for Loos, Independent reports that the woman was said to have made over one million dollars as a result of opportunities that sprouted from her public claims, including interviews and TV roles related to her Beckham story, as well as appearing on UK-based shows Celebrity Love Island, Extreme Celebrity Detox, and The X Factor: Battle of the Stars.
Beckham is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
