Video: Great White Shark Plays Game of "Chicken" with Bold Surfer in SoCal
Great white sharks…they’re more prevalent than perhaps previously thought.
As a recent study from Cal State Long Beach’s Shark Lab showed, great whites are near surfers 97% of the time in southern California, often without the humans even knowing. The study used drones to monitor beaches over a two-year period.
And now, drone operator and shark YouTuber, The Malibu Artist, proves that study.
In his latest video, entitled “Great White Sharks Seem to Be Around Humans All the Time: Plus a Ground Breaking Study Using Drones,” The Malibu Artist (let’s call him TMA, for short), discusses the study from CSLUB, along with showcasing a pretty harrowing shark vs. surfer game of “chicken.”
“This particular shark was displaying its fin,” narrates TMA.
“It was easily visible from shore. It slowly approached the surfer, who also approached. The shark would back away, then circle back. It was evident both the surfer and shark were curious about each other.
“As the Shark Lab study suggests, sharks don’t really want anything to do with humans. But, as always, it’s wise to remember they are still wild animals. Respect and space is key to avoiding an encounter with any unpredictable wild animal.
“It is okay to take a look, but there are always risks involved. Even if they are remote.
“This shark and the surfer both eventually seemed to lose interest in each other, and each returned to their own space. The ocean is their home after all, and we are merely guests.”
Wise word, TMA. Wise words.
