Video: World #4 Pro Surfer Joao Chianca Hospitalized After Wipeout at Pipeline

Details are thin, as of now, but it looks like Pipeline has struck again.

According to reports, Brazilian world #4 surfer Joao Chianca was hospitalized on Sunday, December, 3rd after a wipeout at the North Shore of Oahu surf spot.

Watch below:

The incident comes following a cracking kickoff to the winter season right after Thanksgiving, which you can check out in a full photo gallery here.

Like we said, there’s not a lot known about what exactly happened. But, per the video above, it looks like Chumbinho took off on a bomb, hit the eject button, then…who knows. Most likely whacked his noggin on the reef.

Surfers from the water and the beach rushed his (potentially) unconscious body, and brought him to shore. From there, he was reportedly transported to the hospital.

According to Shannon Reporting, longtime surf filmer:

“?? Surfer @joaochumbinho was just pulled out of the water at Pipeline by the @northshorelifeguardassociation after suffering a concussion and is being transported to the hospital. Please send your love and prayers his way. If you have more information or updates, comment below.

North Shore photographer Brian Bielmann reported:

“Volcom WSL surfer @joaochumbinho had a close call today when he air dropped from the top of a Backdoor Pipeline wave. Thanks to the surfers and the @northshorelifeguardassociation once again he will live to surf another day. Not sure of all the details but word is he is ok. #surfing @volcom @volcomsurf @volcombrasil #pipeline #wipeouts

Per Surfline, here’s the forecast from Sunday on the North Shore:

“Long period NW swell peaking across the North Shore with favorable light easterly winds on tap for this picture perfect Sunday morning. Wave heights are hovering in the well overhead to double overhead high range with sets nearing the triple overhead (15 feet) high mark rolling in at the better exposed locations. NOTE - Do not let the long period energy and the extended waits between sets fool you, there is some SOLID energy on tap today so KNOW YOUR LIMITS AND IF IN DOUBT, DON'T GO OUT! East winds 10 to 15 mph”

Stay tuned for updates.
