It’s that time of year again, when parents skim through hundreds of toy ads, social media suggestions, and articles detailing trending toy predictions for the coming holiday season.

Is it going to be those little Fingerlings that your kiddo squealed over last Christmas, or the Hatchimals that have literally dominated stores for the last several seasons in a row? Walmart did us all a huge solid and gathered together kids from 18 months old to 12 years of age to pick their brains at their sixth-annual Top Rated by Kids Toy event.

The Trends

  1. Famous Friends

  2. Unboxing

  3. Interactive

  4. Outdoor

  5. Aspirational

  6. Gaming

These professional, tiny experts examined, tinkered, and fiddled with toys, ranging from the latest Barbie to interactive teddy bears that are so realistic, your kid will be saying, “Winnie the who?”

At the end of the event, the kiddos weighed in on what they believed would be the standout it toys this year. Can you say little #influencers?! We’ve rounded up the kid-approved, top trending toys of 2019 to demystify and simplify your holiday shopping!

What's the Trend: This holiday season, you can expect to see your kid’s favorite characters from films, television, and storybooks transform into fun and exciting toys. Each item is inspired by the wild adventures that your tot’s favorite characters go on in their respective stories. Your kiddos will feel like they are right alongside the characters they love from their fave 2019 television shows and movies. From the pups that save the day in Paw Patrol's Adventure Bay, to the successful resurgence of The Lion King fandom and all of the classic superheroes in between, "famous friends" is an expected trend this season.

What's the Trend: Who knew that there would be a time when your kids would love the act of simply opening a toy as much as they love playing with it?! Thanks to the surge of social media culture and rise of YouTube, even the youngest family member can hop on the influencer train. If your tot can get lost watching other kids open toys online for hours (or however long their screen time is), then they are probably all about the unboxing toy trend this season. Whether it’s in the form of blind bags or mystery eggs, your little one will be thrilled to get their tiny hands on a surprise, wrapped-up toy this year.

What's the Trend: Some kids daydream about their toys being able to interact with them. Whether that means chatting, playing, or just responding to their commands, your kids would love nothing more than a toy that actually joins in with their playtime. Enter the interactive toy trend. These toys can respond to commands, interact, and play with your kids to keep them entertained. There is always something new to discover.

What's the Trend: Parents worry about their children being able to step away from the screens and head for the outdoor for tech-free activities. We can agree that while it may seem as if kids are more interested in locking into the latest video game or television craze, it turns out that they actually do want to play outside — but also want fun, exciting toys to take with them. While we don't expect kids of this generation to suddenly develop an affinity for playing tag and hide-and-seek until the streetlights come on, the outdoor trend is on the rise this holiday season, and with these toys, they will be begging for you to let them ride around in the driveway.

What's the Trend: Does your kid dream about becoming a doctor or a gymnast when they grow up? Or maybe it’s between a cartoonist and a jewelry designer. Children love imagining their futures and how they will fit into the world. The aspirational toy trend taps into your tot’s creativity and imagination that fuels their dreams of the future.

What's the Trend: Gaming systems have been popular since the days of Atari. While these systems have come a long way since the premiere of games like Centipede and Asteroids, the love kids have for immersing themselves into alternate universes continues to grow.
