Thanks to Walmart's new delivery service, an epic picnic adventure awaits my husband this Father's Day!

Don’t tell my husband — the kiddo and I are plotting to kidnap him and embark on a voyage to a secret land, where delicacies, mystery and intrigue await! Kinda.

We’ve had a challenging year, and he has been an awesome daddy to her and partner to me, keeping us laughing by day, making up fun bedtime stories by night, and providing an endless supply of hugs. We want to spoil him with an awesome Father's Day surprise, but our budget is tight.

The plan is to paddle out in a kayak to a tiny river island for a picnic. We will need some essentials: food, water and protection.

We’ve already got our shopping list going on Walmart+. Since the retail giant offers free same-day (or next-day) delivery on fresh groceries and much more, we are keeping the online shopping cart open — we're certain to have last-minute ideas. If we finalize the order on Friday, we'll still have everything we need in time for the surprise outing.

Walmart+ has been a great help to us already — and I'm not even an official Walmart+ member yet. I'm still enjoying my free 30-day trial (initially I signed up for 15 days, but a few questions got me another 15). When that trial is up, I can continue the service for either $13 per month or $98 per year.

My husband will be so happy to receive this cooling neck gaiter as we embark Sunday. He runs super-hot and it'll be a scorcher here.

The Mission cooling gaiter offers UPF 50 sun protection and actually gets cooler as you sweat, protecting from dust, wind, sun and heat. How am I just now hearing about this?

There are at least a dozen ways to wear this. My husband will most definitely use this as a face mask during yardwork, as a helmet liner on his bike commute and more. I'd be tempted to blindfold him with it all the way to the island if we didn't need his help paddling.

As for the picnic menu, I’m still deciding whether to make vegan mock tuna or homemade hummus sammies with avocado, spinach and heirloom tomato. Either way, good chickpeas (aka garbanzo beans) are key.

Protein- and fiber-rich, chickpeas possess a rich, nutty flavor that serves as a base for lots of great, healthful dishes. Bush’s chickpeas are a solid choice — they taste delicious and cost only one buck per can.

Fresh Red Seedless Grapes

Juicy red seedless grapes will be joining us because (a.) they are my husband’s fave fruit and (b.) they'll hydrate us. These grapes are packed with nutrients and antioxidants, to keep our hearts and bodies healthy and our mouths happy. No picnic would be complete without them.

Fun fact: Did you know that grapes and avocados are berries — and strawberries and raspberries aren’t? Yup. It's amazing what we learn from our first-grader.

Oreo Chocolate Sandwich Cookies, 14.3 oz

My husband and kiddo adore the movie The Parent Trap. They recite lines and have even memorized the tween twins' signature hand-slap routine. In one scene, the characters bond over their taste for Oreos dipped in peanut butter. Father’s Day is a perfect opportunity to finally try out this treat.

This 14.3 oz package of Oreos will get us through a few picnics for just $3. They're vegan and Kosher — and the resealable package will keep us tidy and ant-free.

Now, I'd be remiss not to mention that an Oreo Peanut Butter Creme Chocolate Sandwich Cookie actually exists. For real: The filling is peanut-butter flavor. I hear it is tasty, but we're going old-school with it this time for the full Parent Trap experience.

Topo Chico Mineral Water

"Wow! This really perks me up!" my daughter shouts, sipping an ice-cold Topo Chico sparkling mineral water. It's the only carbonated drink she has tried, and she's so into it.

We decide that refreshing, calorie-free Topo Chico is a must for our adventure, so we've put it on our list. It's an excellent mixer for grown-up drinks too! A dozen 12-ounce bottles for 8 bucks is a bargain.

The special bottle is also giving me an idea: A message in a bottle has to happen on a secret island adventure, right? Of course!

Hello Bello Organic Bug Spray, DEET Free, 6.7 fl oz

I'm not sure what the bug sitch is on that wee island, but I will urge them to social distance. Harsh chemicals are a hard no, though, especially since we will be eating. DEET-free Hello Bello is a hypoallergenic, nonirritating and child-safe spray that repels mosquitoes.

Active ingredients include fragrant citronella, cedarwood, lemongrass, peppermint, thyme and rosemary oils. We can spray it right onto our clothing too.

Ozark Trail -2°C Extra Cold Ice Substitute

Walmart+ has several ice packs on offer for same-day delivery. This extra-cold pack is far more powerful than the little lunch-bag options we have at home. It will keep our picnic items nice and frosty for hours.

I'm part-worrywart, so I'm comforted to know we'll have this on hand in case of a bee sting, ant bite, sprain, strain or other mini-emergency. Since it's so cold, we'll need to wrap it in a cloth first.
