Enter makeup artists Michael Anthony (responsible for all of Katy Perry's sick makeup looks) and Sir John (who slays Beyoncé's/Joan Smalls's/Ashley Benson's makeup on the regular) for suggestions on just that.
"A blue lip is meant to be fun," Sir John says. "It's fun to play with a color like this, it's like stepping into a different character when you wear it," adds Anthony. "There are no guidelines with blue lipstick, you just have to be in the [confident] mindset to wear it, because you'll definitely be noticed."

"If you have fair to light skin, opt for it in a gloss form with an opalescent, prismatic blue or lavender finish that will let you in on the trend and leave you with an ethereal look," Sir John says. "If you do want to wear a darker blue shade, warm up the rest of your skin first with a pink or peach tone on your cheeks. This will give your face a flushed look and the healthier your skin appears, the better the blue lipstick will look-that goes for any complexion but especially fair," he adds.

To avoid blue lipstick from reading too cool of a blue on medium skin tones (i.e. draining your complexion), warm up the lip color with a pink tinted lip balm first, Sir John suggests. If you skip this step, you could end up highlighting your dark circles, if you have them, he adds.
