Martin McDonagh's Banshees of Inisherin follows small-town neighbors Pádraic (Colin Farrell) and Colm (Brendan Gleeson), who have a lifelong friendship until Colm announces he no longer wants Pádraic to speak to him. "I just don’t like you no more," Colm tells Pádraic. What results is a darkly comic film, set in 1923 against the backdrop of the Irish Civil War.
"The starting point was to capture the sadness of a breakup, be it a love breakup or a friendship one," McDonagh explains. "Being on both sides of that is an equally horrible position. To treat the sadness of both sides as truthfully as possible was the main thing I wanted to get right with this."
The Banshees of Inisherin leads the Golden Globes film categories with eight nominees, with nods for Farrell, Gleeson, Kerry Condon, and Barry Keoghan, among others. The movie is also widely considered an Oscars favorite.
Of McDonagh's work, particularly Banshees, Farrell says, "I’ve never been able to detect any hint of subliminal darkness or a sneaky agenda getting through. For all the hilarity, all the awkwardness, all the f**king dynamism of the macabre he presents in the writing, at its core there is, honest to God, a very deep sweetness and tenderness, and a real consideration for human beings, and why we are the way we are."
